How to Cleanse Your Home Energetically: A Complete Guide

Your home is the container for everything you do. The energy that lives in your walls is the energy that lives in your bones. If your space feels off — heavy, restless, sticky, drained — it is. And no amount of vacuuming will touch it.

Energetic cleansing is one of the foundational practices every witch should know. It’s also the easiest thing in the world to do, once you stop overthinking it.

Here’s how to actually cleanse your home — step by step, room by room, with the techniques that work whether you’ve been at this for a decade or a week.

Signs your home needs cleansing

  • You feel tired the moment you walk in, even after a good day.
  • Arguments happen in the same room repeatedly.
  • You sleep poorly even when you’re exhausted.
  • You can’t focus, can’t relax, or can’t get anything done at home.
  • You moved in recently and don’t know the previous occupants’ history.
  • You went through a breakup, a death, an illness, or a significant loss in the space.
  • You’ve had visitors whose energy lingered after they left.
  • Plants keep dying in a particular room.
  • Pets avoid certain corners.
  • You feel watched, restless, or like the room is “holding its breath.”

If three or more of these resonate, do a full cleanse this weekend. If you’re not sure, cleanse anyway. It never hurts. If the heaviness coincides with planetary chaos, the Mercury retrograde survival guide covers additional layers worth adding.

When to cleanse

The classical times to cleanse a home:

  • When you move in. Before you unpack a single box if possible.
  • After an argument or emotional event. Within 24 hours.
  • After someone has been ill. Even a common cold leaves residue.
  • Once a month. Pair it with the new moon for the strongest energetic reset.
  • At the change of every season. Solstices and equinoxes are powerful cleansing days.
  • Before any major spell work. Cleanse, then cast.
  • Whenever the space feels heavy. Trust the feeling.

The five-step cleansing method

This is the structure I use and teach. It works for a 200-square-foot studio or a five-bedroom house. Adjust scale, not steps.

Step 1: Physical clean first

Energy follows the physical. You cannot cleanse a dirty house. Sweep, vacuum, take out the trash, do the dishes, change the sheets, open every window, put away the clutter. The act of cleaning is the first stage of the spell.

Sweep from the back of the house toward the front door. Visualize stagnation moving with the broom. When you finish, sweep that energy out the front door and shut it.

Step 2: Open every window

Even if it’s cold. Even for ten minutes. Stagnant air is the most basic form of stuck energy and the easiest to clear. Open windows on opposite sides of the house if possible to create a cross-draft. Let the air move all the way through.

Step 3: Smoke cleanse every room

Use white sage, palo santo, rosemary, mugwort, lavender, juniper, or cedar — whatever you have access to ethically. (A note on sage: white sage is sacred to several Indigenous American traditions; many witches choose rosemary or garden sage instead, which work just as well.)

Light the bundle. Let it smoke. Walk every room of the house clockwise, starting from the room furthest from the front door and ending at the front door. Pay extra attention to:

  • Corners (energy collects there)
  • Doorways and windows (entry and exit points)
  • Closets (dark and stagnant)
  • Under the bed
  • Above mirrors (mirrors hold reflections, including emotional ones)
  • The space around the bed itself

As you walk, speak aloud: “What is not mine, leave. What does not serve this home, leave. Only love, only peace, only safety remains here.”

Sweep the smoke out the front door at the end. Close the door behind it.

Step 4: Salt the thresholds

Sea salt or kosher salt. Sprinkle a small line across every threshold of the home — the front door, back door, and any door that opens to the outside. Salt is one of the oldest energetic barriers known to witchcraft. It seals what you’ve just cleared and prevents fresh debris from drifting in.

You can vacuum the salt up the next morning and replace it monthly.

Step 5: Bless the space

Removal is only half the work. Once the old energy is out, you have to fill the space with what you want.

Light a white candle in the center of your home (or your living room, if you don’t have a center). Speak aloud what you want this home to be a container for. Specific words matter. Examples:

  • “This is a home of safety.”
  • “This is a home of laughter.”
  • “This is a home of rest, where I sleep deeply and wake easily.”
  • “This is a home of clear thinking and good work.”
  • “This is a home where love grows and stays.”

Speak each one aloud. Let the candle burn for at least an hour while you go about your evening. The cleansing is complete.

Quick daily cleansing for between deep cleanses

  • Open windows for 10 minutes as soon as you wake up.
  • Diffuse essential oils like lavender, frankincense, or eucalyptus.
  • Ring a bell or singing bowl in each room — sound shifts stuck energy faster than almost anything.
  • Burn a small piece of palo santo for 60 seconds before bed.
  • Place black tourmaline or selenite at the front door and on your nightstand — see the 7 crystals every witch should own for which to keep where.
  • Wash your front door with water and a splash of vinegar once a week. The threshold is the most important boundary in your home.

When smoke is not an option: alternatives that work

If you live in an apartment, have asthma, have small children, or just don’t like smoke, these methods are equally effective:

  • Sound — a bell, a singing bowl, or a tuning fork moved through every room.
  • Sound from your own voice — humming or singing while you walk the rooms.
  • Spray cleansing — distilled water, sea salt, and a few drops of essential oil (rosemary, frankincense, or lavender) in a spray bottle. Spritz every room.
  • Sunlight — throw open every curtain on a bright day. Direct sunlight cleanses faster than most people realize.
  • Salt water mopping — a bowl of warm water with a tablespoon of sea salt. Mop the floors clockwise.

A final note from Aurora

You do not have to do everything every time. A 10-minute cleanse on a Sunday afternoon — windows open, sage smoke, salt at the door, candle lit — is enough to keep most homes humming. The deep five-step cleanse is for resets, transitions, and after hard moments.

Your home wants to feel good. The energy is not against you. It just needs a little help moving sometimes.

Open the windows. Light something. Speak the words. Trust that what shouldn’t be there has heard you and is leaving.
