Imbolc is the witch’s first stirring after the long dark. Falling on February 1–2, halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, it is the moment the world remembers it is alive. The light has been returning since Yule, but Imbolc is when you can finally feel it.
If Yule is reflection and Beltane is celebration, Imbolc is the festival of beginning. This is the night we plant the seeds that will bloom by spring.
What Imbolc actually is
Imbolc (pronounced IM-bulk or IM-molc) is one of the four Celtic fire festivals and is sacred to Brigid — the goddess of poetry, healing, fire, and the forge. The Christian Saint Brigid was layered over her, and Candlemas (February 2) sits on the same date for the same reason.
Imbolc translates roughly as in the belly — a reference to the lambs growing inside ewes, the seeds quickening underground, and everything that is alive but not yet visible. This is the festival of potential.
When to celebrate
Traditionally observed on the evening of February 1 through February 2. The closest new moon to that date is the next strongest option if you can’t catch the exact day.
What you’ll need
- One white candle (Brigid’s flame, purity, the returning light)
- One green candle (the green growing back) — see the candle color meanings guide if you want to substitute
- A small bowl of milk or cream (the traditional offering to Brigid)
- A piece of bread or oatcake
- Snowdrops, daffodils, or any early spring flower if available
- A piece of paper and pen
- A clean white cloth — leave outside overnight on Imbolc eve to be blessed by Brigid (the Brat Bhríde)
Step 1: Cleanse and prepare
Imbolc is a cleansing festival. Open every window. Sweep the floors. Smoke cleanse the rooms. Even a quick deep clean of the kitchen counts as ritual on this day. You are clearing the winter out.
Step 2: Light Brigid’s flame
Light the white candle. Speak: “Brigid of the bright flame, mother of poets, healers, and smiths — be welcome at this fire. Bless this hearth, this work, this year ahead.”
Light the green candle. Speak: “For the green that is rising, the seeds quickening underground, the life that is just under the surface — I welcome you back.”
Step 3: Plant your seeds
This is the spell work of Imbolc. On your paper, write three things you are calling forward this year. Not for the next six months — for the full year. Imbolc seeds bloom by Beltane, ripen at Lughnasadh, and are harvested by Samhain.
Be specific. Write in the present tense. Read aloud three times.
Fold the paper and place it under the green candle. Leave it there until the candle burns down.
Step 4: Offer to Brigid
Place the bowl of milk and the bread on your altar or windowsill. Speak: “For your blessing of this house, this year, this work — I give what I have. Walk in this home as you walk in the green earth. So it is.”
Leave the offering overnight. In the morning, pour the milk onto the earth or at the base of a tree. Bury or scatter the bread for the birds.
Step 5: The Brat Bhríde
One of the oldest Imbolc customs. Take a clean white cloth or ribbon and lay it outside on Imbolc eve. As Brigid walks the land that night, she blesses anything left out for her.
Bring the cloth in the next morning. It is now a year-long charm of healing and protection. Use it to wrap injuries, calm the sick, dry tears, or simply keep on your altar as a reminder that you are watched over.
Step 6: Close the rite
Thank Brigid. Speak: “By milk and flame, by green and grain, the rite is sealed. The year begins to wake. So it is.”
