The full moon is the moment in the cycle when energy peaks, which makes it the best night for two very different kinds of work: pulling something toward you, and letting something go.
Most witches build a single ritual around one goal rather than mixing all three, so pick your focus first and gather only what that focus calls for.
What the full moon is actually good for
A new moon is for planting seeds in the dark. A full moon is for the seeds that are already grown, ready to be harvested or cut back. That is why full moon rituals split naturally into manifestation, release, and protection work.
Manifestation ingredients
- White or gold candle for clarity and forward motion
- Citrine or clear quartz to amplify what you are calling in
- Bay leaf with your goal written on it in your own handwriting
- A small mirror to reflect moonlight onto your altar
- Sweet basil or mint for growth and opportunity
Release and letting go ingredients
- Black or grey candle to absorb what you are releasing
- A slip of paper naming the exact thing you are ready to release
- Dried sage or rosemary for a light cleansing burn
- Black tourmaline or obsidian to hold the heavier energy
- A small dish of water to rinse your hands after the release
Protection under the full moon
- Black or white candle for a clean shield
- Salt in a small circle around your working space
- Rosemary or clove for a protective smoke
- Iron, a nail, or a pin as a traditional ward
- Moonstone to keep the shield gentle rather than harsh
Putting the ritual together
Set your ingredients on your altar or a clean cloth under moonlight if you can manage it, even through a window. Light your candle, hold your chosen items, and say plainly what you want, either to call in or to release. Let the candle burn down safely, or snuff it and relight it the next two nights if you prefer a slower build.
How often to work with the full moon
Once a month is plenty. The full moon returns on its own schedule, so there is no benefit in rushing more than one ritual into a single cycle. Let the working settle and do its job before you reach for the next one.
A final note from Aurora
The full moon does not need a perfect setup to work. It needs your attention, a few honest ingredients, and a clear idea of what you are asking for. Start small, keep notes on what you used, and build from there each month.
Where to go from here
If gathering ingredients is only half the battle and you would rather have someone experienced guide the actual casting, that is worth considering too. Full moon work does not have to be done alone.
For a done-for-you option, our Basic Spell Ritual walks through the casting itself rather than just the prep, and if lunar work is becoming a regular part of your practice, the Moon Water guide pairs naturally with everything on this list.
